Our Story
From a pioneering farm on the slopes of Mount Monduli to one of Tanzania's most modern and sustainably managed estates.
The Mondul Coffee Estates are situated on the slopes of Mount Monduli in the Arusha region of northern Tanzania. This unique location — volcanic soil at 1,600 to 1,800 metres above sea level with perfect climatic conditions — provides everything needed to grow the finest Arabica coffee.
What began in 1931 as a pioneering farm has grown into a 511-hectare estate with 266 hectares dedicated to Arabica cultivation. Through generations of stewardship, the estate has maintained its commitment to quality while embracing modern sustainable practices.
Mondul Coffee Estates is founded on the slopes of Mount Monduli, Arusha. The volcanic soil and high altitude create ideal conditions for premium Arabica cultivation.
The estate grows steadily, establishing a reputation for consistently high-quality Tanzanian Arabica among international buyers. The Kent, Bourbon and SL varietals thrive at altitude.
A group of shareholders acquires the estate and begins a programme of modernisation — embracing traditional farming methods while adopting modern practices. New machines are acquired, the factories are rebuilt, and staff housing is renovated.
Today Mondul is one of the most modern, sustainable and responsibly managed coffee farms in Tanzania. With 200+ permanent staff living onsite, a state-of-the-art cupping kitchen and spring-fed processing factory, the estate produces specialty micro-lots, peaberry and commercial AA and AB grades.
Our guiding principles and highest priority are sustainability, fairness and a respect for our natural resources.
Two natural springs feed our environmentally friendly factory. We use biodegradable substances wherever possible, compost cherry pulp with worms to create organic fertiliser, and our dairy project provides manure for the fields.
We offer fair conditions of employment to all our employees. Every permanent member of staff lives on-site with free and secure housing, medical services, pension lands, sports facilities and free schooling for their children.
The estate borders Burka Forest, one of the last and largest indigenous forests in Arusha. Its preservation has led to a dramatic increase in wildlife diversity, including over 120 species of bird. We train dedicated wildlife wardens to protect and conserve this habitat.
Mondul Coffee Estates are one of the few coffee farms where every permanent member of staff lives on site. We provide our employees and their families with free and secure housing, medical services, pension lands, sports facilities and free schooling.
Once a year, during harvest time, up to 250 pickers from neighbouring villages traditionally help our fieldworkers fulfil the immense task of handpicking the ripe cherries. This seasonal partnership strengthens the bonds between our estate and the surrounding communities.
We welcome buyers, roasters and coffee professionals to visit our estate in Arusha. Get in touch to arrange a visit or request samples of our current harvest.
